Atwood Update: One thing is for sure...these kids are ready for ATWOOD!! They were just bursting today with excitement...and questions :) We went over the bus, packing, medicine, money, showering, food, you name it we talked about it! On Monday, students are to arrive to school at normal time. If they would like to come a bit before to get their stuff settled, that is fine. I will be in our designated area starting at 8 am. Students are to drop their bags off under the Student Council bulletin board (right outside the Multipurpose Room). I will be there to check for 3 things:
* All bags, sleeping bags, pillow are labeled with a name (I will have tape/marker)
* All medicines that are brought must be turned into me
* Students can turn their money into me if they would like me to hold onto it until the store (they are responsible for their money if they choose to hold onto it)
Students are to bring a pillow and a sleeping bag or sheet/blanket. Students are welcome to bring a small snack for the bus ride there, but all left over food will be collected once we arrive. They will not need a snack on the way back because we will be eating lunch before we depart. They can bring things like notebooks, books, cards, or coloring books for the bus ride as well. Like stated in the registration form, no electronics are allowed (cameras are permitted). Students will have an opportunity to shower at night, but it is not mandatory. Please discuss with them showering and pack the necessary items. Please make sure a jacket of some kind comes with them, right now it looks like it will be around 50 and sunny :) If they do not have a rain coat, a poncho on top may be a good option. Two pairs of shoes are recommended in case one pair gets wet the first day. The packing list supplied by Atwood is a great resource!
I will be checking my email over the weekend and before I come to school Monday, so please email me with any questions! I will send a mass email on Monday to all parents once we have arrived and then send another email when we depart from Atwood on Tuesday.
PARCC Testing will begin next week: Please read the message below.
This spring 3rd-8th grade students will be taking the PARCC test. 3rd -5th grade students will begin testing the week of March 28th. 6th-8th grade students will begin the week of April 4th. Homeroom teachers will provide a more information about each homeroom's individual testing schedule. Although this year PARCC is not the official CPS test (currently NWEA MAP) that will determine grade level promotion and selective enrollment scoring it may be as soon as next year. We hope that all Coonley students take advantage of this opportunity to experience this test so that they are comfortable with the format.
* Specific testing dates/times will be posted at the end of this week.

Hour of Code. We had a great time participating in the Hour of Code this year. Our field trip to DePaul University really inspired many to want to code. We explored ways to code with Minecraft, Star Wars, and other fun games, too! Ask your child what coding they did during the Hour of Code!
Winter Break is near! We will be on winter break from December 19 - January 3rd. See you back in school on January 4th, 2016!
Our Holiday Party will be on Friday, December 18th from 2:30 until 3:15. Don't forget to bring your SECRET Santa gift for your classmate!

Dear 306, 211, 212, and 217 Parents:
We are piloting a new Report Card Pick Up protocol.
It is our hope that parents and teachers will have ample opportunity for discussion and that this process will avoid long waiting times and be respectful of your time.
As we get closer to Report Card Pick Up Day, more information will be provided so that you are able to sign up for additional conferences with your teacher of choice.

Happy Halloween! We had a very fun celebration today decorating pumpkins and snacking on festive treats. Thank you to all who helped with treats and the fun activity!! Here are some reminders and upcoming events:
A note about Classwork/Homework - All work done, in all subjects, is expected to be done with correct punctuation, neatly and with a name. If any work is turned in that does not have proper capitalization, punctuation or without a name, then there will be an automatic point deducted. We are asking parents to encourage their student to reread their work at home for proper grammar before turning their assignments in at school. Thank you for support in this!
October 23, 2015
Here are a few announcements:
All my classes of math students will be starting our second unit next week. Room 211 will be working with integers and rational numbers. Room 306, 212, and 217 will be exploring ratios, rational numbers, and equivalence in numbers. I'm excited to get into our new units and to continue building on our math skills.
October 9, 2015
Room 211 has had a great week this week. Here are a few upcoming events.
Also, we have had a couple instances of students eating a non-healthy snack before lunch. Please make sure to send a healthy snack (i.e., no chips, cookies, candy, etc.). Those items can be eaten at lunch but need to stay in their lunchbox until lunchtime. Thank you!
Enjoy the three-day weekend!
October 2, 2015 Happy Fall!
Lot's of great things happening in October that I wanted to remind you about...
Also, a couple more reminders. If your child has received a 50% on an assignment in Gradebook, that means that the assignment was not turned in. Your child should consult with their teacher to see if the assignment can be turned in late.
Finally, if you child needs to come work with a teacher before school, they will need to get a Morning Hall Pass filled out by the teacher they need to visit. These Hall Passes are the only way your child will be allowed into the building before school.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
September 18, 2015
